1986 ALCS, Game 5_ Red Sox @ Angels

Source:MLB Vault– Boston Red Sox OF Dave Henderson’s game winning HR, against the Anaheim Angels in game 5.

Source:The New Democrat

“Boston Red Sox 7 at California Angels 6, F/11 — The Angels needed only one more out to earn their first World Series appearance, but it was the Red Sox who had destiny on their side. Angels closer Donnie Moore pushed Dave Henderson and the Red Sox one strike away from elimination, but Henderson earned redemption for an earlier fielding miscue by hitting Moore’s second 2-2 pitch over the left-field fence to give the Red Sox a 6-5 lead. The Angels tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, but Henderson’s sacrifice fly off Moore in the eleventh gave the Red Sox the lead and they went on to win the series in seven games.”

From MLB Vault

Perhaps the best MLB playoff game at least in my lifetime. And the biggest choke in my lifetime at least in MLB with the Angels blowing a 3-1 series lead with the opportunity to win the American League Championship at home with their offense, defense and pitching. And they simply didn’t close the door to a team they probably should’ve beaten at least in six games if not five.

Wally Joyner not in the Angels lineup certainly hurt them in-game 5. But you got to know that they had the Red Sox beat in the ninth inning with their closer Donnie Moore who was lights out most of the 1986 season on the mound. He makes a bad pitch to Dave Henderson and that forces the game to extra innings. But Joyner would’ve been a big force in the Angels lineup in-game 6 and 7, when the Red Sox blew out the Angels at Fenway Park.

Game 3 of the 1979 ALCS being played at Anaheim Stadium. And if you guessed Anaheim Stadium is located in Anaheim, California, you have a solid grasp of the obvious.

It’s ironic that 1979 would be the season that the Anaheim Angels would finally make to postseason play, since this was the last season before the converted what was a beautiful baseball park, to what would become another artificial, multipurpose stadium, with the Los Angeles Rams moving to Anaheim in 1980 and becoming the Anaheim Rams. But pre-football, Anaheim was similar to Royals Stadium in Kansas City, except Anaheim has always had grass. It was a beautiful ballpark.

1986 Angels

Source:NBC Sports– the Angels and Brewers from 1986.

The 1986 Angels were a very good, if not great all around team: hitting, pitching, and defense that should’ve at least gotten to the World Series. But of course lost three straight games in the ALCS after having a 3-1 lead in that series.

The Angels, who contended both in 84 and 85 in the AL West, which was back before the wildcard came into both leagues, looked like the team to beat in the AL West both seasons. 1986, they weren’t expected to win the AL West, especially the way that they did by being in first place most of the season. But in 86, they put it together for the whole season, both with their offense and pitching. And managed to avoid fading in August and September like they did in 84 and 85.

The 1986 Brewers, were somewhat in transition. Especially with their pitching and weren’t contenders at all and about a 500 ball club.

NBC Sports_ MLB 1978-World Series-Game 2_ New York Yankees @ Los Angeles Dodgers_ Full Game _ The Daily JournalSource:NBC Sports with the 1978 MLB World Series.

“1978 World Series Game 2 New York @ Los Angeles”

Source:John Quinn

Not often, at least since that we’ve seen rematches in the World Series. Which is what 1978 was since the Dodgers played the Yankees in the 1977 World Series as well. But this was a rematch and one of the best World Series ever with two very close teams and the series could’ve gone either way.

What separates the World Series of the 1970s from today, is that back then the series wasn’t just between the two teams that won their league championship, or got hot at the perfect time. But we’re really against two great teams.

Both the 78 Yankees and 78 Dodgers, were deep teams both offensively, as well as pitching. They could hit for average, power, run the bases. Unlike team teams today that might be really good in one area like with their pitching, but barley score enough to win games. Or score a lot of runs, but have weak starting pitching.

NBC Sports_ MLB 1989-AL East Championship- Baltimore Orioles @ Toronto Blue Jays_ Full Game _ The Daily JournalSource:NBC Sports– babydoll I mean announcer (understandable mistake) Gayle Gardner.

“1989 Toronto Blue Jays CLINCHING game Original CTV NBC Broadcast”

From Newton Minnowowski

The Orioles could’ve definitely had won this series and won the AL East in 1989. But blew too many opportunities in the first two games to win it. And it seemed like the Blue Jays capitalized on all the Orioles mistakes in this series. Not that different from the 1969 MLB World Series between the Orioles and New York Mets, when the Mets seemed to come up with all the clutch plays.

“1986 06 14 NBC GOW New York Yankees at Baltimore Orioles”

From NBC Sports

The Orioles started the first of three straight losing seasons in 1986. And 5-6 losing seasons from 1986-91, going through a pretty bad stretch of bad baseball as they closed out Baltimore Memorial Stadium in 1991. 1986 dealing with a bunch of injuries that season and key hitters like Eddie Murray and Fred Lynn dealing with injuries. While the Yankees were still contending, but again not making the playoffs in 1986.

With the Orioles, they were dealing with key injuries to their best players and hitters especially in Murray and Lynn. You’re talking about two of the best all around players in the game at this point. And two of the best power hitters in the game as well. And when your team isn’t that deep to begin with, losing a Lynn and Murray at the same time is really difficult. 1986, very similar as 1984, 87 and 88 for the Yankees. A very solid lineup offensively, but not enough starting pitching and enough depth in the bullpen for the Yankees to win the AL East, which was a great division back then and still is today.

ABC Sports_ MLB 1979- Baltimore Orioles @ New York Yankees_ Farewell To Thurman Munson (8_06_1979) _ The Daily JournalSource:ABC Sports– New York Yankees catcher Thurman Munson.

Arguably One Of The Finest Yankee Games Ever. A MUST SEE FOR ALL YANKEE FANS. This video cannot be found anywhere on the internet .Yankees Retro is the only place to catch this legendary game in it’s entirety.Yankee great Thurman Munson Was Tragically Killed In A Airplane Crash just 5 days prior to this game. This day he would be buried in his native Ohio, just several hours later the Yankees flew back to New York To take on the First place Baltimore Orioles,The game was telecast on August 6,1979 on ABC TV. The Yankees were well out of the pennant race at this point but their task was to win this one for their beloved captain.Falling quickly behind 4 To 0,it seemed likely they would loose,But The Heroics Of Bobby Murcer (Who was a One Man Wrecking Crew ,driving in all 5 Yankee Runs was enough to win it for Munson).Murcer Belted a 3 run homer in the bottom of the 7th to bring the Yankees to within 1 run. Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th with Bucky Dent and Willie Randolph on Base .Murcer jerked a line drive double down the left field foul line, scoring both men.The Yankess won the game 5-4…. From Yankees 32 Retro

Thurman Munson definitely would’ve been a Hall of Famer had he lived and not have died prematurely. Because he was that great of an all around player. A great defensive catcher and hitter who hit for average, power, and a great clutch hitter.

When the New York Yankees lost Thurman Munson, they didn’t lose their starting catcher. They lost their captain, their leader, their best all around player. The man who is in the same class as a Johnny Bench or Carlton Fisk, when it comes to catchers in baseball. The best of the best, because that is exactly who Thurman was. You couldn’t of had a better player  and man than Thurman Munson as your starting catcher back in the 1970s and I would argue certainly today.

There has really only been on catcher who is in the same class of a Bench, Fisk, or Munson, today. Ivan Rodriguez, who really does represent old school MLB players and catchers. Someone who was great at calling the game and defending his position,  first. But who was never an easy out and someone you would ever have hitting in the bottom of your lineup, because he was not only a great catcher, but a great hitter as well. Both Thurman and Ivan, were catchers who you could have sitting at the top of your lineup, because they hit for average, didn’t strike out much, and could also hit for power.

That is how great a player Thurman was. Before the 1970s, catchers were almost looked at like pitchers. You expected them to defend their position and if they could do anything other than that, that was considered a plus. Bench, Fisk, and Munson, changed how we look at the catcher position today. We look at them now as great athletes and not just guys who call the game and defend home plate.

Baltimore Orioles 1989_ Opening Day vs Boston Red Sox (2013) - Google Search

Source:Baltimore Orioles Baseball– opening day 1989.

“The 1988 Baltimore Orioles started the ’88 season 0-21 and finished that year with a record of just 54 wins, and 108 losses. So when the 1989 season began, no one gave the Orioles a chance to even compete. But the young and hungry Orioles had something to prove, going 87-75 and finishing just two games out of first place in the American League East. During that season, the term, “WHY NOT?”, was coined by Oriole fans, and it has lived with us since that magical season.”

From Baltimore Orioles Baseball

An opening day I will always remember even though I was only thirteen at the time. But in 1988 the Orioles lost their first twenty one games and had one of the worst teams in MLB history. In 1989 they were in first place in the AL East for most of the season and that started on opening day. Against the defending AL East champion Boston Red Sox.

Just listening to and watching this video and hearing Jon Miller narrate it, should give you an excellent idea what Baltimore Memorial Stadium was like when the Orioles were good, or at least were winning. The fans were on top of the action and close to the game, so it was very noisy. Plus Baltimore sports fans love their teams, which just made Baltimore Memorial with the atmosphere and the visual of the ballpark, a great place to watch baseball.
