The Colts glory days left Baltimore before the franchise did in 1984. To the point they were no longer even an AFC Playoff contender, but had slipped to one of the worst franchises in the AFC, but NFL all together. The 1981 Colts looked like what they had been in 1978 and 1979, which was a competitive, but not a winning team with a real shot at making the AFC Playoffs. The last 6 years were awful for the Colts in Baltimore, including a winless team in 1982 and the franchise losing fans because of their consistent losing. Which was the Colts management’s fault when the Colts left Baltimore for Indianapolis.

Strange name for an NFL team’s yearbook film, Dredging For Gold, for a club that finished 2-14. Perhaps the name for their yearbook film should’ve been, “Dredging For The Number One Pick in The 1982 NFL Draft”. Because that is the only thing teams this bad that lose almost all of their games are in contention for. “How bad do we have to be to get the top pick in next year’s draft. And what solid veterans do we have that contending clubs want and need that would trade draft picks and young talented players for us in exchange”. Because when you have a year that was as bad as the Colts did in 1981, championships and playoffs are light-years away for you.

1981 ALDS Game 3 - Royals at Athletics

“1981 ALDS Game 3 – Royals at Athletics”

From F1 Nut

Oakland Athletics OF and leadoff hitter Ricky Henderson. The Kansas City Royals did an excellent job of keeping Ricky off the bases during the first two games at Kansas City. The problem is they lost both games, which meant the Athletics had other hitters that could hurt you and did.

The expanded MLB Playoffs is not the problem I have with the MLB Playoffs in 1981 in the American League and National League. It’s how they did it which is the problem with the teams having the best records in first and second halves of the season in each division qualifying for the playoffs in each league. Which meant four teams making the playoffs in both leagues, which is how MLB did it from 1995-2011. Which again I don’t have a problem with, but how they did it.

Instead of having the teams that had the best records in their divisions for the entire season and have the two second place teams in each league qualifying as wildcards in each league, they had the best teams in the first halves of the season, play the teams with the best record of the second half of the season. Which meant teams like the Cincinnati Reds who had the best overall record in the NL West in 1981, missed the NL Playoffs because they didn’t have the best record in their division in either the first or second half of 1981.

CBS Evening News_ Walter Cronkite’s Last Day Newscast (03_06_1981) _ The Daily JournalSource:CBS News anchorman Walter Cronkite saying that’s the way it is, for the last time as anchor of the CBS Evening News.

“As a special tribute to the late great Walter Cronkite, this is a re-upload of Mr. Cronkite’s final CBS Evening News broadcast from March 6th, 1981. Originally posted by LATVNews. This is Part 5 of 5.”

From Stevie Boy

Still the best news anchor America has ever seen. Walter Cronkite, wasn’t the CBS Evening News, (as great of a title that would have been) he wasn’t CBS News, (again as great of an honor that would have been) he was network news. He was the gold standard for how good real news anchors are judged by. People who anchor real news shows and real news stories. Stories that have real importance to the country. Perhaps that don’t draw the best ratings, or are the most entertaining. But real-life stories that effect everyone in the country. A true news anchor and not an entertainment news anchor, covers current affairs and national affairs. Issues involving the entire country. Like our foreign policy, national security and economy.

Source:NBC Sports– intro of the 1980 AFC Championship.

“Battle of the Bay. Chargers and Raiders. AFC Championship Game. The great Dick Enberg on the mic with the late great Merlin Olsen. Also notice the fan showing a poster with the N logo even though NBC already switched to a new logo (not bright)

I OWN NOTHING!! EVERYTHING BELONGS TO NBC/COMCAST/NFL AND ONLY THEM!!”

From Jean

Dick Enberg with a real good intro here. Not his best, but I believe he was one of the better announcers at the intro because of his voice, his passion for sports, perhaps especially football and he knew what he was talking about as well. So he brought a realness to his work.

As far as this game, I wish I could’ve found something more than just this intro, but this was all that was available at this time. But the Raiders-Chargers AFC Final was a classic matchup of a very good and talented, well-coached intelligent team in the Raiders. Against a very explosive offense especially in their passing game in the Chargers. Who also had a good running game, but never played enough defense to get actually get to a Super Bowl. And still have only been to one Super Bowl in their entire history.
