Oriole Magic Returns

Oriole Magic Returns

Source: This piece was originally posted at The New Democrat Plus

This was certainly one of the highlights of the 1989 Orioles season, that again had their been a wildcard back then, the Orioles make the AL Playoffs with 89 wins, but that is a different story. The 1989 Orioles are what a good team looks like. Not a great team, not a talented team, but what a team looks like. How good a team can be when it has a lot of good players and is deep. As well as lets say average players who have big years and big moments for them. The 89 Orioles were a pitching and defense first team, that would score enough and score when they needed in order to win. Their pitching wasn’t very good in this game, so their offense backed them up and scored enough runs to win and bailout the Orioles pitching in this game.

1986 ALCS, Game 5_ Red Sox @ Angels

Source:MLB Vault– Boston Red Sox OF Dave Henderson’s game winning HR, against the Anaheim Angels in game 5.

Source:The New Democrat

“Boston Red Sox 7 at California Angels 6, F/11 — The Angels needed only one more out to earn their first World Series appearance, but it was the Red Sox who had destiny on their side. Angels closer Donnie Moore pushed Dave Henderson and the Red Sox one strike away from elimination, but Henderson earned redemption for an earlier fielding miscue by hitting Moore’s second 2-2 pitch over the left-field fence to give the Red Sox a 6-5 lead. The Angels tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, but Henderson’s sacrifice fly off Moore in the eleventh gave the Red Sox the lead and they went on to win the series in seven games.”

From MLB Vault

Perhaps the best MLB playoff game at least in my lifetime. And the biggest choke in my lifetime at least in MLB with the Angels blowing a 3-1 series lead with the opportunity to win the American League Championship at home with their offense, defense and pitching. And they simply didn’t close the door to a team they probably should’ve beaten at least in six games if not five.

Wally Joyner not in the Angels lineup certainly hurt them in-game 5. But you got to know that they had the Red Sox beat in the ninth inning with their closer Donnie Moore who was lights out most of the 1986 season on the mound. He makes a bad pitch to Dave Henderson and that forces the game to extra innings. But Joyner would’ve been a big force in the Angels lineup in-game 6 and 7, when the Red Sox blew out the Angels at Fenway Park.

1979 ALCS Game 3 (1)Source:MLB Home Video– former Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres 1B Steve Garvey.

Game 3 of the 1979 ALCS being played at Anaheim Stadium. And if you guessed Anaheim Stadium is located in Anaheim, California, you have a solid grasp of the obvious.

It’s ironic that 1979 would be the season that the Anaheim Angels would finally make to postseason play, since this was the last season before the converted what was a beautiful baseball park, to what would become another artificial, multipurpose stadium, with the Los Angeles Rams moving to Anaheim in 1980 and becoming the Anaheim Rams. But pre-football, Anaheim was similar to Royals Stadium in Kansas City, except Anaheim has always had grass. It was a beautiful ballpark.

“1980 MLB California Angels vs Chicago White Sox”

From Mercerr 22

Source:Baseball Classics

Not a good way to end a Major League Baseball season other than to see a game at the great Comiskey Park, than to have the 65-95 Anaheim Angels vs the 70-90 Chicago White Sox. Which is what the records of these two clubs would be after this game no matter who won or loss.

The White Sox of the 1970s were like their brothers from the National League the Chicago Cubs in the 1970s. You knew basically when the season would start that they would probably have a losing record. The question would be whether they would finish in last place or not.

The Angels were very different especially in the late 1970s after requiring star players like pitchers Nolan Ryan, Frank Tannana, hitters like Don Baylor, Brian Downing and several others, Rod Carew would be another one. They won the AL West in 1979 and at least going in the 1980 season were probably thinking they would at least contend for the AL West if not win the American League all together. Interesting that they would go from being a first place team in the AL West, to sixth place team in just one season.

1986 Angels

Source:NBC Sports– the Angels and Brewers from 1986.

The 1986 Angels were a very good, if not great all around team: hitting, pitching, and defense that should’ve at least gotten to the World Series. But of course lost three straight games in the ALCS after having a 3-1 lead in that series.

The Angels, who contended both in 84 and 85 in the AL West, which was back before the wildcard came into both leagues, looked like the team to beat in the AL West both seasons. 1986, they weren’t expected to win the AL West, especially the way that they did by being in first place most of the season. But in 86, they put it together for the whole season, both with their offense and pitching. And managed to avoid fading in August and September like they did in 84 and 85.

The 1986 Brewers, were somewhat in transition. Especially with their pitching and weren’t contenders at all and about a 500 ball club.

NBC Sports_ MLB 1986-GOW-6_14_86_ Kansas City Royals @ Anaheim Angels_ Don Sutton Goes For 300 _ The Daily JournalSource:NBC Sports– Anaheim Angels starting pitcher Don Sutton.

“1986-06-14 NBC GOW – Royals at Angels (Sutton tries for #300) Don Sutton tries for 300th victory in this NBC Baseball Game of the Week”

From Classic MLB

Three hundred wins not something that we’ll see many if any pitchers achieve in the future because of how prominent bullpens are now in Major League Baseball and how easy managers look to their bullpen when there’s any sign of trouble in the middle and late innings now in. Close games with some many close games being played now with all the parity and Don Sutton a Hall of Fame pitcher and one of the best all time achieving this back in 1986. Great game to watch.

“1985-08-04 Twins at Angels Carew’s 3,000 hit”

From Classic MLB

Rod Carew was a classic pure hitter who was always looking to go with the pitch. Meaning hit the ball where it was pitched so if the pitch is out side, he would hit the ball the other way and if the pitch was inside he would look to pull the ball. And never over swinging, but making solid contact with the pitches he was given.

1979 ALCS game 1 California Angels at Baltimore Orioles PART 1 Jim Palm_

Source:GI Bomber– The Earl of Baltimore: Orioles Manager Earl Weaver.

“Nolan Ryan’s last start as an Angel.”

From GI Bomber

Nolan Ryan vs. Jim Palmer, I mean you couldn’t ask for anything more. Perhaps the two best pitchers in the American League at this point and in Jim Palmer’s case perhaps the best pitcher in the American League.

I have Palmer, Steve Carlton and Tom Seaver as the top three pitchers of this era in Major League Baseball. But Ryan didn’t pitch very well against the Orioles at least at Baltimore Memorial Stadium. He was a much better pitcher at Anaheim Stadium for the Angels than he was on the road.

This was an excellent matchup for an ALCS. Both the Angels and Orioles had good pitching, in the Orioles case great pitching. Both teams had very good lineups offensively and played good defense. The Orioles just simply did those things better than the Angels in this series.
