I think one of the reasons why Elizabeth Taylor was such a great survivor, was because she had a great sense of humor. I would have paid anything to hear her private conversations with Richard Burton. Who could be a Little Dick (ha, ha) when talking to Liz. I think listening to them talk to each other would be like being at a great two-person comedy show. Like watching the Rat Pack, Abbott and Costello, only funnier. If you’re familiar with the movie Whose Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (That is not a question, but a movie) It is one of the most dramatic movies you’ll ever see. But Liz and Richard turn it into a comedy, because a lot as far as how the couple communicates with each other in that movie, is how Burton and Liz, communicated in real-life.

Without her sense of humor, I don’t think Liz makes it to 79. I mean think about all the bullshit she went through in real-life and that is not talking about her movies, but her own life. I mean boredom alone could have killed her when she was married to Senator John Warner when they were married in the late 1970s and early 80s. She loses husband Michael Todd, to a plane crash. She survives what seven divorces, but manages to hang on to all her wealth that she earned after each divorce. She survives cancer and again makes a better life for herself afterwords. She is sort of the Bill Clinton Hollywood. She shoots one of her toes off, but grows a bigger healthier toe after losing the original toe. You don’t live the life that she did without being able to make fun of people effectively. Especially yourself and all of your screw ups.

As far as Liz’s advice on life, that is the roadmap she lived by to get through her 79 years. What choice do you have when you’re consistently knocked down. Especially from walking into doors, because you’re not paying attention. You either first realize how stupid you were, or how badly someone screwed you and either learn from your mistakes and get back up, or you lay down and claim life is not fair and wait to die. It is not a question of whether someone gets knocked down in life, or not. And getting knocked down in life by itself is not a bad thing. Getting knocked down in life is a reminder that you’re not perfect and you’re only human which is all you should want to be anyway. It’s the aftermath that is key. Do you learn from experience and adjust appropriately and get back up as a better person. Or do you just stay on the ground and rot away.

Liz Taylor’s message on life, was one foot forward after another. Figure out where you’re going and then ultimately get there. You’re going to take wrong turns at some point as we all do, but the key is to recognize them and then correct your course as a better person. Not lie on the floor and bitch about how unfair life is, or yell at your GPS for giving you wrong directions. But instead figure out what is not working especially your own mistakes and fix the issues and move forward. Get to wherever which is the best place for you. Knowing you’re going to screw up again, but the more you learn about yourself and where you come up short, the better you’ll be able correct your own shortcomings. And make fewer mistakes in the future.

Speaking of annoyances in life, how about Joan Rivers. After listening to that performance, the whole damn thing by the way, I feel like I just got back from a Judas Priest heavy metal concert. And I was not only in the first row, but right in front of the speakers listening for two-hours straight. Looks like I’m going to the ear-doctor tomorrow, because I can’t even hear myself think. So if this post sounds strange it is because I might not know what I’m saying, because I can’t even hear myself think. Joan was very funny, but her act was loud to put it mildly. That is just sort of how she spoke to people and performed.

As far as what Joan was talking about. Filthy people, who likes filthy people especially if they live right next door to you, or worst even in your home. Wait I think I got it, filthy people like filthy people. Could you imagine a filthy person getting on someone for being filthy. That would be like an alcoholic getting on someone who smokes too much. It would be a little hard to put up with without making fun of a the tiny hypocrisy there. But the part of that is funny, is that she also doesn’t like to clean, but with the money she had, she probably had her own cleaning crew. So it worked out for her.

Joan doesn’t like cooking, so I guess going to her place for dinner meant bringing your own food. Unless she ordered out for both of you, or perhaps had her cooking staff prepare a meal for you. Aging, you know this is going to sound as obvious as saying when you jump in a lake, you’re going to get wet. And perhaps will sound easy coming from a guy, especially a guy who is not an athlete or divorced. But if you want to live a long time and I mean really live and not just be alive and do it for a long time, you’re going to age. Speaking about facts of life.

“Bon Jovi – It’s My Life (Official Music Video) Music video by Bon Jovi performing It’s My Life. (C) 2003 The Island Def Jam Music Group”

From Bon Jovi

I’m not a big Jon Bon Jovi fan, but one song of his that I’m a big fan of is It’s My Life, because that song perfectly describes how I look at life. It’s My Life, that tells me that I have to live it and I better be in charged of it. And not let others live my life for me, meaning being in charged of it. Because I’m the one that’s going to have to deal with the consequences of it good or bad. So I better be the one making the decisions in it, calling the plays.

There few ways to be alive – The first one and unfortunately the most common one (at least from my perspective) is living your life the way people around you want you to live your life. Living your life to make other people happy. This happens a lot when men who are looking to pass their business down to their kids. To run their business, whether their kids are interested in the business or not or even want to run the business.

Another way to live your life is risk free take, no chances, don’t do anything that can hurt you. You live your life that way, you may a live a long time (if you don’t bore yourself into a coma or death) but you’re probably not going to be very happy. To me that’s being alive, but not living, which are two different things.

The third way and the way I prefer to live my life and this starting during the Hippie Revolution, is to live your life by living it, living your life the way that makes you happy. Figuring out what you want to do with your life and then being as productive at that as possible. Whether that makes people around you happy or not. If they really love you and you’re not hurting yourself and they understand that, they’ll be happy that you’re happy. Even if what you’re doing with your life is not how they would live their own lives. That’s called living your life, not just being alive technically, but being alive emotionally as well.

This is what life is about to me, because at the end of the day you’re the one, that has to deal with the consequences of your own decisions. So make the best of them with the best facts and information available and make them your own with no regrets.
